August Community Bulletin

Arts & Culture

  • August 16th, 1pm -- 31ST ANNUAL KINGSTON ARTIST'S DOWNHILL DERBY! -- Whether it's your annual tradition or you've never made it before, don't miss this year's Derby! For the first time ever Chicory is sponsoring a vehicle, and we'd love to see you on one of our favorite days of the year. Don't forget to stop by 25 Broadway for a special little surpriiiise!
  • August 14th - 16th, 7:15pm -- Esopus Creek Puppet Suite -- The Arms of the Sea Theater presents their annual puppetry extravaganza, a celebration of puppet theater as a vibrant form of art and community. The Puppet Suite is made new each year and brought to life by volunteers performing alongside veteran company members. The Tidewater Center, Saugerties.
  • August 16th, 2-5pm --Garden Art Pop-Up at Hudson Valley Brewery-- Join for an afternoon of art inspired by gardens! Artist @bycodie will be creating custom veggie or fruit drawings on request. Kids can decorate a flower pot and plant a seed, and check out some veggie instruments! All proceeds support Land to Learn's SproutEd program, bringing garden-based education to K-3 students across Kingston, Beacon & Newburgh.

Have you heard? We are in the process of myceliating into the other half of 25 Broadway! The Chicory Classroom will serve as our bonafide events space, supporting a robust calendar of inclusive community events & educational programming throughout the year.

Our vision is to cover about half the cost of the expansion with ticketed events and private rentals, and the other half by a membership program annnnd...a select number of generous sponsors!

We're looking for individuals, businesses and other orgs who see the value in giving $250 - $1000 (or more, heck!) to sponsor individual events and event series.

Currently, we'd love to find sponsors for an inaugural lecture series that will start this October!

If desired, we will include names/ organizations/ logos in all promotions (printed posters, event listings, newsletter, etc.) and in-person at the events.

For gifts of $1000 or more, we would also love to offer reciprocity in the form of two seats at a foraged & local foods dinner party, timed around the season of spring emergence next May.

We are not a 501(c)3, so donations are not tax-deductible, but we hope & believe the value of supporting free and pay-what-you-can environmental programming to the community speaks for itself.

Please reach out to Chris to speak further about becoming a sponsor!

Education, Enjoyment & Stewardship

  • August 18th, 6-7pm -- Stop Zena Development Community Meeting -- Please join SZD and neighbors from Woodstock and Ulster at the Mescal Hornbeck Community Center at 56 Rock City Road in Woodstock to discuss next steps as neighbors continue our fight to stop a dangerous, environmentally destructive luxury subdivision. There is still so much work to do! Together, we will conserve this precious 625 acre forest.
  • August 20th, 5:30-7:30pm -- KLT Stewardship Party at Red Fox Ravine -- Pick up hands-on skills in ecological restoration, then kick back with refreshments in the quarry community space and connect with fellow volunteers. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity and willingness to pitch in for the forest. Tools and guidance provided. Be sure to RSVP to Greg (greg@kingstonlandtrust.org)
  • August 21st, 6-8pm --Waders and Ice Cream-- August may be hot and humid, but “fall” migration is underway and the Esopus Meadows can often harbor large concentrations of waders like Great Egrets--and if water chestnut harvesting provides landing pads, shorebirds not always easy to locate in county too. After a tough evening of scanning the river for peeps and waders we recommend you try to recuperate over a soft serve cone post outing at one of the local ice cream establishments. Contact Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com ) to register.
644 Broadway, Kingston.
